British Tourists in Spain Reckless, Report Concludes

A study titled the British Behaviour Report by England’s Foreign Office concluded that British tourists between 2005 and 2006 were particularly reckless in their holiday forays abroad, particularly in Spain and the USA.

In total, around 20,000 Britons in Spain and the USA required some form of consular assistance. Loss of passports, hospitalization and incarceration were a few of the top predicaments British tourists found themselves in while vacationing abroad.

Between April 2005 and March 2006 approximately 14 million Britons chose to spend their holidays in Spain, making it the preferred destination worldwide. The number of Britons who got themselves into trouble during this period nearly reached 11,000; 6,000 of these lost their passport, 1,500 were arrested by Spanish police and 601 were hospitalized.

In the USA the number of Britons needing help from the Foreign Office was closer to 9,000, a surprising figure taking into account the significantly reduced number of tourists who vacationed there during the period in question: only 4 million.

In France, where 11 million British tourists spent their vacation, only around 3,000 required consular help.

The top countries visited by British tourists during the period being studied were: Spain (14 million), France (11 million), Ireland (4.2 million), USA (4 million) and Italy (3.4 million).
